    Former Navy here. To hear Mr. Metz say, “The gun on a fighter era is over”, is shocking to say the least. In war it’s inevitable that fighter planes are going to get into turn fights with other fighter planes, no matter how advanced our air to air missiles are.

    we need more of this 49:51 come on the pilot couldn't do a crossword puzzle while AA refueling, i have done air to air refuel in this big girl and once again is the most hard plane to AAR in DCS, the pilot must have his eyes fixed on the lights of the tanker. i loved to much this, is sad that a year ago 2023 DCS hadn't the F-4 yet like it does now, would be sweet to see it in action since DCS F4E is a high detailed aircraft, would be nice to interview again Starbaby with the DCS F-4E

    this is Gold, tx so much, now that im flying it on DCS The version E, this is my Favorite plane to fly and the F-14A/B as well. Man flying the F-4E feels like driving a big mustang or Cadillac , not a easy plane to master at all, actually i think it is the most hard plane to Master in DCS, the F14 is way easier but the F4 isnt very forgiven if you make mistakes, you will loose all the energy in a heartbeat, the Landing im still trying to Master after 2 Months of trying it over and over and nice to listen the landing speed with around 3,335 U.S. gal of fuel is around 170-175knt because i was always trying it at 150-155knts now i know why i have always hard landings, surely i need more 15-20knt of speed to make this baby touch smoothly on the runway. Once again THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH, and Mr Capt Starbaby Pietrucha tx for your service, this video was so entertaining and helpful, cheers from Portugal

    im curious why the airforce never developed a weapon to couple with the harm for dead after it was suppressed, or even instead, like why not have a missile with a cbu payload that seaks on radars that are on, and uses an ins nav to targets that go quiet that blankets the entire area where the radar was with explosives, just seesm to me the most effective way to make sure once you find a target you dont need to keep suppressing it every time you go out there. the line of thinking that got me here was basicly do you wish you had access to cbu jsows to send after you launched a harm to destroy what ever you suppressed.

    The utility hydraulic system was set up such that the number 2 engine pump put out a little bit less pressure than the number 1 engine. This is the reason why you always started the number 2 engine first because it used one gauge for both engines. The only way to tell if the number two engine hydraulic pump was working to specifications was to start it first otherwise if you start the number 1 first you’ll have 3000 psi sitting there on that needle and not knowing if the number two engine was putting out its specified pressure.

    This is hands down the best interview I have seen since I came home from desert storm. I was a wild weasel crew chief at George Air Force Base. This brings back so many memories that I can’t count them. What an honor to have served with these men. It was always humorous to me that after that Spang jet crashed from fuel starvation, and they took the wings off, put it on a flatbed trailer, and some local rear ended the truck that was carrying this plane back to base it, I took photos of the airplane sitting there in a pile, but I never pilfered through it. It was just a relic of the war in which we kicked ass.

      Thank you, Stearman! I still have a few pieces of 571, and the loss of that airplane I put squarely on 1. Tanker planners who put too many jets in one place, and 2. AWACS not telling my wingman: “Hey, don’t go to KKMC…the VFR wx forecast actually went zero-zero, and the Army accidentally cut the electrical cable to the runway lights and ILS.” 😡 Incidentally, we tried to smuggle the tail of 571 back to Spang to put in the squadron bar…we put it on a pallet, and were going to cover it with mobility bags. 😝 But…it was a little too big, and a corner of it stuck out. So, we sadly left it behind. 😢😭

    The Soviets didn't think the Physic paper was worth the trouble. As the number to achieve radar deflection was so big. You would need to spend 20 years for each angle the aircraft would see. It would make Maxwell have a migraine. The mathematical numbers was that big..

    ICS box was the LS-460B. 1 hr 4. C-10832 UHF control box [have quick 1] We were always going around and around and around with Depot. The black plastic tips and the white for tone were always going missing, so we'd order new ones. Note: The Have-Quick II UHF control box, in the upper left corner, had a small connector so you could load the Word-of-Day. They never came in and we'd (after 90 days), by regulations, have to kick them back to Depot. Depot would complain we were sending the control boxes back to them without the caps. (Duh! That's what was missing and we couldn't get the parts! And its not like there were a zillion replacement control boxes in the system. So I tried ordering the whole switch. Those came in and we'd just take the cap off the replacement switch and fix the control box. Then the spring on the control box knob was weak. After awhile you could tap the knob and it would spin. (You'd pull back on the control know to access the have quick modes). One of my guys found a five cent fix. Take the face plate off and take the side panels off. Take the nut holding the control switch in place off and pull the switch back so you could slide a flat washer over the shaft. Slide the switch back into place and re-assemble. Depot lied and insisted on replacing the whole switch at 350 USD per control box. They didn't want to 'have to stock 50,000 different flat washers. That it would be using a flat washer in stock didn't matter to them. We were tasked to do as much stuff as we could do out in the (battle) field. Supplies and parts were always going to be an issue. It might be a couple of months before you got parts. It came down to politics. Screw'em. We fixed it ourselves. Command told us to keep doing what we were doing. Of course, they'd disavow any knowledge of such an action; if we got caught. If a visual inspection on a control box came up with a blown capacitor we'd order it. Sometimes supply didn't catch it wasn't something we were authorized to order. If the capacitor came in and it fixed the control box. Great. If it didn't-we'd kick the control box back to Depot. I know they've automatic test stations now. That takes all the fun out of it.

      He then goes on to talk about the Aux 'Radio' (receiver). The AM-2349A. It also had an ADF (automatic direction finding) so they could find the flying gas station. It was original F-4 equipment (stone age) versus the (space age) arc-164 UHF radio. The arc-164 had no moving parts. This particular aircraft had the Control Box separated from the RT-1145 radio and the UHF mount (interface to the aircraft). The RT-1168 had the radio attached to the back of the control box 'slice'. It was used in the F-16 (for one). The arc 164 radio was very reliable. The aux rcvr was; air cooled, 'rock bound' (crystal controlled 20 of them) 20 channel, mechanical tuning with tubes solid steel.

    The AN/ASM-75A Compass System is very basic. Never had a problem with a flux valve going bad. A few times where the back seat and front didn't agree. I was always a bad indicator. The maintenance tech had to be very careful when ordering or repairing a control stick. The useable on codes were horrible. You could put the wrong stick on the aircraft. Same went for the Arm Control Panel. I remember an incident where the wrong stick and control panel had been installed on an OV-10 and the aircraft had rockets installed before a stray voltage check had been done on the pods. First person to get in the cockpit checked the 781 and saw no problems and hit the battery switch. The crew chief powered up the MD-1 generator and when the guy in the cockpit hit the inverter switch all hell broke loose. Rocket went down range on the ground, hit a sand pile, and scared a bunch of workers filling sand bags.

The old civilian who was doing the work was in a hanger that had bad lighting which changed the color of the wires. We would have to do a first power on check and would pull the aircraft to a safe location because you didn't know what would happen. Like the M-60C machine guns trying to fire. Liked the interview. Was assigned to the 20TASS in Vietnam, (1970-1971). The OV-10a couldn't maintain altitude on one engine. We lost two aircraft, (same crew each time), they found a valley that was a bathtub with no outlet. The first time they had one engine shot out and couldn't climb out. Had to eject. Two weeks later they had a repeat performance. When ejecting from an OV-10 you punch through the canopy. The seat has a rocket and all the wires for the instrument panel run under the seat. It really pissed off maintenance if a crew did a zero Zero eject and the aircraft survived. We had that happen twice. I loved the sound effects of Spike. In Vietnam I could identify an aircraft by the noise it made flying overhead. Our jeeps were M148s and we seldom used a trailer to carry radios. Always love to hear what the OV-10 did after Vietnam. I know one was shot down by an F-16 in South America.

    • @brrrtbacheniraq873
      @brrrtbacheniraq873 27 дней назад

      Thanks, Mike! And yes, the OV-10 that was shot down was during an attempted coup in Venezuela. 😬😕 (Gunned him…ouch). I never knew this until just now: the Bronco pilot ejected, and survived! Venezuelan Air Force F-16, piloted by Lt. Beltran Vielma, shoots down a rebel OV-10 Bronco near El Libertador Air Base during the second coup attempt of 1992, on November 27. Vielma used the M61 Vulcan cannon of his F-16 to destroy the light attack aircraft. The rebel pilot, Lt. Carlos Mictil, ejected safely and was arrested later. The Venezuelan coup attempts of 1992 were attempts to seize control of the government of Venezuela by the Hugo Chávez-led Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200. The first coup attempt took place on 4 February 1992, and was led by Chávez. A second coup attempt on 27 November 1992, took place while Chávez was in prison but was directed by a group of young military officers who were loyal to the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200. On 27 November 1992, the OV-10s were widely used by mutinous officers who staged the second attempted coup against former President Carlos Andrés Pérez. The rebels dropped bombs and launched rockets against police and government buildings in Caracas. Four Broncos were lost during the uprising.

Just FYI: found your podcast on Spotify and had to both sub to your RUclips channel and give it a like. I work nights and listening to your show makes time fly. I appreciate the level of detail you get into with your guests. Oh, and Mr Coker how about those accommodations at Camp Mobile (H220) 😂 not sure if you were there when we reflagged from the 4/7 Cav but when I first got there we still had quonset huts. Still though, some of the best times of my life.

    I agree with the format idea, you being framed smaller is "imagery 101" as far as focus and framing goes. Even _IF_ you've got a voice for radio and a face for youtube. 🙃

    I really enjoyed listening to Gabby. Dad had the same nuke mission at RAF Woodbridge, toss-bombing in the Voodoo in the early 60s. He also mentioned ad-hoc fighting the RAF Lightning. Not sure about the 70s, but when Robin Olds was CO in the 60s, there was a great social scene. Mom has good stories.

    Fantastic interview, truly humbling what these guys did and Mr Morgans honesty in this piece. Can't imagine the level of focus and reflexes required to down three helicopters, or two planes in a matter of seconds, while flying at the very limits of your vehicles capability, close enough to the enemy to actually knock them out of the sky with your wing vortices! Then having to fly back with not enough fuel and nail a rapid landing in the dark while not qualified for that duty! Genuinely heroic. Also interesting that the software for the new sidewinders was written on the fly and a bit buggy, that can't have made things any easier. The more I find out about the Falklands war the more I realize we only won due to the profesionalism and tactical superiority of our troops, if we had been a bit less good at soldiering in all it's many forms and the Argentinians had had better leadership we could easily have faced a military disaster and defeat, it's thanks to people like Dave Morgan that the taskforce prevailed.

    Good video. I found buttons and axis that I hadn't realized where there. This has been a welcomed upgrade from my Saitek X-65F.
